How to make a Medical Mask

Stacks Image 3
Well Hellooooo,

There was just so much info to share that I felt this link was the best way to make it available. While I’ve made each washable mask with lots of TLC, they haven’t been tested for effectiveness. Any mask is better than none.

Please read throughout and take extra precautions using this mask as you see fit.

Keeping yourself protected, helps keep others well. Thank you to all who are actively helping others.

Use and Care Instructions

Before Use:
Pull the ends of the ties to open, then tie around your ears where comfortable. Double knot the ties and trim 2 finger width from the knot so they will not pull out when washing.

Some masks are made with an inner channel for a pipe cleaner or twist tie over the nose or a side opening to insert a surgical mask, coffee filter or other filter for additional protection. Test that you can still breathe through it easily.

Slip a card between the fabric layers and write your name on the inside with permanent ink.

Remove wires and disposable filters before daily washing. If unable to wash after every use, toss your mask into a hot dryer for 10 minutes to help kill germs. Do not microwave.
Store clean masks in a baggie. And carry another one, labelled for used masks.

Mask Making Links

Important Tips:
When making masks, always make the lining different than outer fabric so you can label the inside and will always wear it with exposed area to the outside.
A densely woven fabric offers the best protection. Avoid knits and loose weaves.
A filter that is neither knit not woven is best. Picture felt with fibers mashed together. Some use vacuum bags or coffee filters. Check breathability before offering to children or elders.

Cleaning Face Masks
If you suspect you’ve been exposed to covid-19, I recommend you carefully remove your mask at a safe distance. Place it in a pot of boiling water and let it sit for 10 minutes before washing.

There aren't any hard and fast rules regarding how often you should wash face masks because it's really depending on the frequency of use, according to the CDC. If you want to be extra cautious or think there may be a possibility that someone is symptomatic, or has sneezed or coughed within close proximity, clean your face mask after each use. Keep in mind, though, that you shouldn't be using face masks frequently, since public health officials urge everyone to only go to grocery stores, pharmacies, and convenience stores when they are in need of essential items.

Clean with heat

There aren’t published studies on how COVID-19 stands up to various temperatures, but the World Health Organization (WHO) found that 132.8 degrees Fahrenheit (56 degrees Celsius) is hot enough to kill the coronavirus that causes SARS. Other tests found higher temperatures, up to 149º F (65º C), are more effective.

Sanitizing your mask won’t change a thing if you don’t store it properly. Once you have a clean mask, put it in a closed plastic container or a new zip-close bag by itself.
